Southend 2-0 Northampton (Sat 17th)
17th August 2013
Southend had made a flying start to the season but Northampton had found a foothold the weekend prior, so it made for an interesting meeting at Roots Hall on Saturday.
The hosts were the victors in the end though, a third win in as many league two games meant this was the best start to a season they'd had in over 20-years...
It could have been so different, as within the first 10-minutes Northampton were awarded a penalty. O'Donovan stepped up against his former side but Bentley thwarted him, parrying the ball to safety.
Just 22-minutes in, and a penalty miss behind them, the Cobblers then went down to 10-men when Hackett was sent off for a late challenge on Straker, a second yellow meant an early bath.
Playing more than an hour with 10-men was going to make it a tough job for the visitors...
Straker (38), with his first goal for the club, headed the Shrimpers into a half time lead when he headed home from close range.
At the midway point of the second half a 2-0 Southend win was confirmed when former Welsh international Eastwood (62) showed his class as he fired home.
