The season is just a week away, however Aidy Boothroyd admits that Northampton aren't "ready" for it!
Boothroyd has made five additions this summer but he's still after a right back and a striker, as the Cobblers are still light in both areas, in particular the striking department.
The Northampton boss told BBC Radio Northampton: 'We're not ready for the season.
'I've got a right-back to organise - Kevin is looking a strong favourite there. And we need another frontman.'
Kevin Amankwaah remains on trail with the club, in fact the 31-year-old should complete his arrival in the coming days but with just three fit strikers on the books at Sixfields, and JJ Hooper's signing more for "the future", he needs more.
It's a small squad the club have but a quality one, he added: 'It would be great if I'm in the position with four frontmen.
'We do need to score goals. I think we're going to be more fluid, a faster, more mobile team. but we're going to struggle in terms of depth. We've gone back to the old days of a small squad with quality.'
Of course Northampton do have striker Alex Nicholls on the books, however he's still on the road to recovery following his broken leg last season.
Never nice to hear the boss voicing concerns with the season so close, however I'm thinking that some of it is a form of mind games perhaps to elude rivals as well as a way of looking to play down fans' expectations this season?
