Northampton Secure Wembley Spot

Northampton Secure Wembley Spot

Cheltenham 0-1 Northampton

Whaddon Road

At around the same point as in the first leg Northampton scored in the second at Cheltenham on Sunday to secure a League Two play off spot, where they'll face Bradford.

1-0 down from the first leg, Cheltenham given their fine home record, would have still fancied overturning the deficit and early on they had a chance when they were awarded a penalty.

Having struggled to score, failing to score since a win over Exeter on April 20th, Marlon Pack had the chance to change this for Cheltenham but Lee Nicholls brilliantly saved his 14th minute penalty though.

Northampton made the hosts pay the penalty, quite literally, when Luke Guttridge (28) scored a stunning 25-yard effort - strange how the goal in this leg came at almost the identical time that the goal had in the first leg.

Incredible that goal was the first that Scott Brown had conceded at Whaddon Road in over two-months!

As time ticked away Chris Hackett really should have secured the tie, however when one-on-one with the Cheltenham keeper he was unable to beat Brown.

Cheltenham must have known their luck was out when a Kaid Mohamed header came back off the bar with a little over ten-minutes to play with Northampton seeing out a 1-0 win, 2-0 on aggregate, to book a place in the final on May 18th.

It's joy for The Cobblers but for a second successive season The Robins are left to reflect on what might have been as they lost out in the play offs once again.
