Alex Nicholls suffered a double leg break at the weekend following a challenge by Port Vale's John McCombe.
The Port Vale captain was shown a red card and after more than 10-minutes of on the field treatment the Northampton striker was taken from the field in an ambulance.
Nicholls has undergone successful surgery, as a club statement confirmed: 'Alex Nicholls is recovering well in hospital after suffering a broken fibia and tibia.
'He underwent surgery on Saturday evening to have an intramedullary nail inserted into his tibia, and that operation was a success.
'He may need a skin graft later this week, but the doctors will need to assess the wound before deciding how to proceed.
'We would like to thank supporters of all clubs for their kind messages towards Alex that have been posted on our official Facebook page, we will make sure they are passed on to Alex.'
The striker will be out of action for a long time, but just making a recovery is the priority at the moment and hopefully this will be a full one to see him playing for The Cobblers again next season, as it's highly unlikely he'll return until at least then.
