Having spent the last few months of the season on loan at Cork City, Tadhg Purcell is set to join the 'Rebel Army' on a permanent basis after being released from his contract at Northampton Town.
Northampton fans will feel they never saw the best of Purcell who was injured during his first full start for the club against Wycombe Wanderers back in 2010 and subsequently ruled out for the whole season. Since that time Purcell struggled with fitness and looked way short of the required levels to compete at League 2 football. Purcell was shipped out on loan to Darlington but after a brief spell where he failed to impress he returned to Northampton. His final loan spell while contracted to the Cobblers saw him return to his native Ireland for a spell with Cork City and by all accounts he has gradually improved and started to look like the player he was before his horrendous injury, recently scoring a hat trick to boost his goal tally.
Off the back of this it may seem strange that Northampton have released Purcell but it is a move that suits all parties, I think the hierachy at Cobblers will be pleased to get Purcell off the wage bill and not willing to take the risk in keeping him on the books after such a serious injury. I am sure all fans from Northampton will wish Tadhg well for the future.
